Atlantis Hotel Dubai :-)

Just been looking up where we're playing in Dubai on NYE - seems to be quite a familiar landmark!

Unfortunately we aren't being put up in the Atlantis Hotel itself, but we get use of the pool etc :-) Trunks at the ready then!

Residential roads set for speed trap explosion

Average speed cameras, so beloved of motorway work areas, are to be introduced to residential neighbourhoods in the New Year after being approved by the Home Office.

The cameras, which will operate in clusters, are linked together wirelessly, and can track motorists over an area of up to 15 miles, assessing the time over the distance.

Although the average speed cameras, known as Specs3, don't result in as many speeding tickets as the traditional Gatso cameras, they do lower traffic casualties. According to data, more than 99 per cent of motorists obey the limit when the cameras are in operation.

Department of Transportation research has shown that reducing speed to 20mph in residential areas is much safer, so the average speed cameras are seen as an effective alternative to the more usual traffic calming measures.

The critics reply

Critics aren't convinced by the new measure. They point out that motorists will still speed for short bursts, but the stops and starts of a residential area will still mean their average speed will be less than 20 mph.

However, Councillor Bob Belam, cabinet member for environment at Waltham Forest council, is convinced. He told The Times: "Having this [new] technology will be more beneficial than a series of road humps that slow down the response times of the ambulances and fire engines."

It will certainly increase the number of speeding tickets, which last year passed the 1.5 million mark for the first time.

The beginning of the universe

Just read this on a Christian forum here (this is quite a chilling place actually)

Atheism
The belief that there was nothing.
Nothing happened to nothing and then nothing magically exploded for no reason creating everything and then a bunch of everything magically rearranged itself for no reason whatsoever into self-replicating bits which turned into Dinosaurs.
Makes perfect sense
.

Someone uses it as their signature.

Obviously this was supposed to be a joke at the apparent gaping holes in atheism.  Ironically it seems to me that that description of the beginning of the universe is actually not too far off the mark!  I found it to be quite a concise description of what happened; if that doesn't sit well with you, or you choose not to believe it then so be it.  A universe without purpose is an idea some people simply cannot grapple with.

Day off to recover from my cold.

Finally I have some time to sit and try to shake off this incessant cough - it's almost gone now . . . really annoying. Doing a concert every night and having to stifle my uncontrollable urge to cough and splutter through all the quiet sections (which I can tell you there are quite a lot of!).  Jack Jones isn't the easiest man to work for, he knows exactly what he wants, but we've got it together now and all the guys from the US are friendly.  Enjoying the MD Jeff's playing on the duo tunes, very tasteful.

Belfast tomorrow, then Glasgow then moving down south for the remainder - shame we have to drive really, the yanks get a tour bus.  Oh well, maybe I'll rise to that level one day :-)

Putting my birthday on hold this year!  Probably for the best - I can't say that I'm enamoured by the thought of this year's approaching age.

Google voice search for Nokias :-)

This app actually works as well! I thought this was way too good to be true - voice recognition search, yeah right! But it's really good on my first few trials. As it also has location recognition from the on-board GPS it will even give you the most relevant local results. Searches for 'fish and chip takeaway' brought up the takeaway down the road top of the list, 'Vietnamese restaurant Ilkley' brought the place I was eating at tonight (the location of which I didn't know, and so promtly clicked the link to open in my mobile Google Maps app). Even a search for Thai restaurant didn't create any confusion with Gentleman's tailors, mixing up the word 'tie'. You can set the accent to US, UK and Australian amongst a few others - UK worked just fine for me. This comes at the same time as Google's navigation app for their Android OS which also features voice recognition. I did away with pen and paper a long time ago, is it soon time to do away with typing??!

AUTISTIC ARTIST STEPHEN WILTSHIRE IS DRAWING NEW YORK FROM MEMORY

AUTISTIC ARTIST STEPHEN WILTSHIRE IS DRAWING NEW YORK FROM MEMORY

After just 20 minutes in a helicopter above the Manhattan skyline, autistic artist Stephen Wiltshire was ready to re-create a city that took hundreds of years to build.

Wiltshire is drawing a 20-foot panoramic view of New York – all from memory. The 35-year-old artist’s autistic disorder affects his ability to interact with other people. It has also given him a photographic memory – and a gift for putting it on paper.

“I just looked without drawing,” said Wiltshire as he explained how he is able to draw the skyline without referring back to a photograph of the city.

“Everything is like a TV show,” he said. “I have never drawn from a sketchbook.”

Wiltshire, a Londoner, is creating the image at the Pratt Institute of Art in Brooklyn, where the public can watch him work through Friday afternoon.

Very tempting Spotify premium phone deal

Phone network 3 have just announced they will be bundling 24 months Spotify premium license in their phone contract in the near future.  Not only that but it will be available with the HTC Hero Android OS phone.  For someone who uses Google's services as much as I do this is a very tempting prospect :-)  The HTC Hero should be the perfect device for my needs - just a slight shame I have another 10 months on my current contract *boo!*.  I like my N95 8GB though, might just have to wait, unless anyone wants to take on my contract!  Also the price of the Hero will probably drop in a year.

Jon's boomarang sunglasses

Ok, i haven't seen my sunglasses since Oct 4th. I was gutted when I lost them because they're REALLY good and i got them half price from Quicksilver. Bolle. So that's 14 days. I've probably driven 800-1000 miles in those 2 weeks but look at the photo and see where I found my glasses today.

I'm still in shock as to how that happened! Very pleased though :-)

I've had a photo considered for Schmap?!?!

Anyone heard of this?  Seems to be some sort of tourist info site.  They found my photo on Flickr, and this is the one that interested them - it's for their Sheffield guide.

Bizarre.

Awesome Google Maps / Twitter location / embedding nonsense!

I found this guy who made it easy to embed a Google Map showing your most recent Twitter location.  Awesome!  Gonna try and get this on my blog permanently - anyone know if it's possible to stick a particular blog post to the top of the screen / list?

My Signet

For my 18th birthday I was given a gold ring (courtesy of my Dad) which had been engraved with my signet, or at least one version of the many designs which could be created.  (Signet meaning your initials entwined in some artistic way).  I thought I it would be nice if I started using this little symbol more, because it's quite nice, and as I am creating a website I could use it as a logo or something.  So I opened up my trusty Professional Desktop Graphic Design package (Paint) and set to work!  See what you think :-)

Chillies anyone?

This is almost the full harvest for this year I guess, there's just a few stragglers left just turning red. I think I've identified them as the Prairie Fire variety - unless any experts out there want to correct me? The chart i found rates them as HOT, but hey there only small...! Anyone want to count them for me?

Ok, so Jenny flew to Georgia today (the ex-Soviet state not Atlanta, Georgia) to sing in a music festival there. It's a great honour that her choir was invited to go, I doubt any others from the UK will be there, and the Georgians are all amazing singers! That sounds ludicrous to say (!) but it seems to be a tradition over there. They have a song for everything: going to work, before meals, after meals, morning song, bedtime song, returning home from work song, and needless to say, drinking song. So all in all it will be an amazing experience.

Anyway, Jenny left me the details of the hotel she would be staying in (which I duly entered into my amazing synchronized calendar system so there would be no danger of me losing it) and so today I thought I'd check the place out on Google Maps.

This was the result:

The more perceptive of you will have noticed that all the roads, and indeed everything else, disappears as it approaches the Georgian border. There could be 3 reasons for this:

1) there are no roads in Georgia (unlikely)

2) Google hasn't got around to mapping this area yet (given that they've finished all the surrounding areas I'd say also unlikely)

3) Google tried to map the area but all their staff were assassinated by Soviet secret agents.

(in case you were wandering neither of the search results were in fact the hotel in question)

I have heard from Jenny and everyone arrived safely and apparently their hosts are all extremely friendly (I guess they all are at first), but I shall be happier when she once again is homeward bound.

Georgian choir Samzeo have an amazingly original sound and their MySpace page has some great recordings - click here.
